Learning Through Environments

Ngutu College takes a holistic approach to education by extending learning beyond the classroom walls and into the environments surrounding the College. We believe environments are powerful educators, and we are dedicated to creating indoor and outdoor spaces that promote curiosity, creativity and a love of learning.

At Ngutu College, learning spaces are designed to be welcoming and homely, encouraging children and young people to feel comfortable and familiar in their environment. These spaces are flexible and adaptable, supporting a wide range of learning opportunities and catering to individual needs. Learners are empowered to make decisions about where and with whom they work, fostering a highly collaborative learning process and nurturing both personal and social capabilities.

The College has transformed its outdoor spaces from a blank canvas into dynamic and engaging areas that encourage exploration, playfulness, reflection, relaxation, high-energy activities and connection with the natural world. We believe these environments are essential for providing learners with experiences that inspire their natural sense of wonder and inquiry. By encouraging custodianship and responsibility for the environment, we aim to instill a deep appreciation for the world we live in.

Connecting with Country

Ngutu College is committed to connecting with Kaurna Country and providing opportunities for children and young people to learn through and about culture on this Country. By embedding these experiences, including frequent excursions, into our curriculum, we aim to foster a deep appreciation for the cultural and ecological context in which we live and learn.

Our approach to education is founded on the belief that the environment is a powerful and holistic educator, shaping the learning experiences of individuals and their communities. We recognise that learning is not limited to the classroom; the environments in which we learn play a vital role in shaping our experiences and outcomes. We believe learning is most effective when it is connected to the physical, social and cultural contexts of the learners and education should support their understanding of and engagement with the world around them.

We would like to acknowledge that Ngutu College has been developed on Kaurna Country and in doing so, we honour the Kaurna people as the custodians of the land and the Elders – past, present and emerging, who are the custodians of the culture, education system and philosophy upon which the College has been founded.

Kaurna Land spans from Crystal Brook in the north. Cape Jervois in the south, the Adelaide hills in the east and waters in the west. Kaurna land borders Nukunu, Ngarrindjeri, Peramangk, Narungga and Ngadjuri. The term ‘Kaurna’ likely finds it’s roots from the neighbouring Ramindjeri/Ngarrindjeri language, showing the closeness between Aboriginal lands.
